Made this into a way-future-dated post so that it stays at the top for those who are interested in resources, and put it behind an lj-cut for those who aren't. :)

And what they don't tell you about the automatic name change is that in lists like this, where you've alphabetized, you're going to have to mess around with things. Grumblegrumble...

Since it seems there are getting to be quite a few of these, I've moved them out of my userinfo and put them on a sticky so I can just go back and update as I go, without having to subject folks who look at the userinfo to the scroll-of-doom...

Thank you to my friends for the birthday wishes :D
leviathanmuse,
strangemuses and I went out to my new favourite restaurant, Ziki, for dinner. It's a Japanese hibachi restaurant and they do the whole fancy show for dinner, including bouncing the egg (for fried rice) on the spatula and the onion volcano and all. They have really yummy food and a good choice of meats (steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, filet mignon, lobster!), and the whole dinner is the clear soup with seaweed, a little salad with a ginger dressing, rice (steamed or fried), soba noodles, appetizer shrimp, the meat, and veggies. Yum!
Anyway, as we were sitting in the parking lot waiting for
strangemuses I saw a big-ass bird sitting on the fence of the next-door gas station's dumpster. I thought at first it was a hawk, and pointed it out to
leviathanmuse. And then it turned to face us and we could see its head was nekkid and red -- NOT a hawk, a VULTURE! Yep, a dumpster-diving vulture! It apparently was having an argument with a crow who finally got fed up and chased it off. It amused the fuck out of me to see this crow (tiny compared to it!) chasing it off to the trees across the highway where some of its buddies were soaring.
For dinner, I had the filet and lobster, with a sake, and green tea ice cream for dessert. Very yummy :D
It was fun, the food and company was good, and how often do you get to watch crows chase vultures away?

Your result for The Commonly Confused Words Test...
English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 100% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!
Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

Okay, I need to be able to read/edit both Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel files on my iPod Touch. Do any of you have advice as to which is the best app to use for either/both?
I've been using my (ancient) Jornada 820 for these files for years, but I can't connect it to my laptop (no serial port!), so I can't edit the files on my laptop at home. I can connect it to my work computer, but have no LJ access there, so the things I need both for are kind of difficult to do...
Help?

We're heading down to Williamsburg for a few days -- will be back sometime Thursday. We'll be around off and on, but probably not for long stretches. Hugs to all!

Forgot to mention this. Today, I got an e-mail from SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) that there has been a bill drafted to repeal DADT. I really, really hope it goes through! [For those who don't work with military personnel, DADT is 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' which is the law where if you state you're homosexual, you get kicked out of the military. Thousands of servicemembers who WANT to serve are either unable to get in, or are discharged yearly. It is a ridiculously unfair law (and I'm not really sure if it was better than the old UCMJ Article 125 (I think it's 125...)) and I'm sure the other countries who allow openly gay members to serve are laughing their butts off at the 'big strong Americans' who are afraid of it...]
If you want to read more, or send an e-mail to your representative to ask them to co-sponsor the bill, you can go here: http://www.sldn.org/page/speakout/cospo nsors
I am so hopeful that the Pentagon will finally get it's head out of its arse...

Not joining any communities regarding this, although I know there are a few. Mainly because I'm too lazy and/or busy to review the books unless something really strikes me as interesting/outstanding/worthy of comment. BUT, I want to keep track of the books I read during the year, just out of curiosity, to see how many I do read.
So, without further ado:
(Started in 2008 but finished on 1/1/09):
Stargate Atlantis #9 - Mirror, Mirror by Sabine C. Bauer
Sometime between 1/1/09 and 1/23/09:
Torchwood Almost Perfect by James Goss
Trickster's Queen by Tamora Pierce
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Between 1/23/09 and 1/29/09:
Torchwood Pack Animals by Peter Anghelides
In February:
Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko
Day Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
3/8/09:
Supernatural Witch's Canyon by Jeff Mariotte

Torchwood S3 is being toned down for the US.
(The article looks only vaguely spoilerish in a very broad sense -- even I read it.)
Now, don't get me wrong -- I always suspected the language used on the show would be a bit of a problem for the US, but just figured they'd bleep/silence it the way they do with so many movies that are 'edited for content' when they run on TV (especially funny to watch those with the captions on when they leave the full text in...).
If they cut out any of the suggestive subject matter, they had better do it with an even hand across the board, not just going after the GBLT content, or I will be PISSED.
Of course, I'm sure violence will be left in with no problem at all...
*sigh* Country of fucking prudes, we are.

She wasn't 'my' Catwoman (I can't help it, I thought Julie Newmar was the cat's meow, so to speak...) but I still loved her, and her gorgeous voice.

As pretty much anyone on this continent knows (and many on others) the new TV season is starting up. People are going to be squeeing about shows, and I'm all for that. But PLEASE remember, the LJ-cut is your friend :D
Please, please cut spoilers for new episodes of stuff, so that those of us who are trying really, really hard to avoid reading things don't run into landmines on our own flists. Thank you -- it's appreciated!!
That being said, UNDER AN HOUR TO GO OMG I CAN'T FOCUS EEEEEEEK!!!

Yes, I am an Olympics fan. An Olympics geek. Crazed. Something like that.
I also work until 6:30pm, and sometimes have errands to run after work.
That being said, there are times when I won't get home before certain results have been aired.
PLEASE exercise common sense and spoiler protect if you're squeeing about results -- considering time-zone differences and all, it's going to be SO hard to avoid being spoiled as it is. I'd really appreciate it if my friends list isn't a mine-field of Olympic spoilers...
Granted, stuff will probably have me so far behind that I won't even be reading, but Swimming, Gymnastics, T&F, and Equestrian are my biggies. If you're squeeing about those, LJ-cut is your friend! :D
Thanks for your consideration!!
